Engine Diagnostics & Check Engine Light

Find the fault. Fix the cause. Not the symptom.

A check engine light is a starting point, not a diagnosis. We read the codes, then find the fault that set them.

What engine diagnostics actually involves

When your check engine light comes on, the car has stored a fault code. That code tells us which circuit or system reported a problem — it does not tell us which part failed. A code for a lean fuel mixture, for example, can be a vacuum leak, a failing sensor, a weak fuel pump or a dirty air-flow meter. Replacing the part named in the code is the most common way to spend money and still have the light come back.

So we read the codes, then test the system they point at. That means live data while the engine runs, checking what the sensors are actually reporting against what they should be reporting at that temperature and load.

When to get a scan

  • Check engine light on, steady or flashing — a flashing light means stop driving and call us
  • The car failed a smog check
  • Rough running, hesitation or a noticeable drop in fuel economy
  • A warning light you do not recognise
  • The light came on, then went off by itself — the code is still stored

What the scan covers

  • Read stored, pending and permanent fault codes
  • Review freeze-frame data — the conditions when the fault occurred
  • Check live sensor data against expected values
  • Test the specific circuit the code points at
  • Confirm readiness monitors, which matters before a smog test
  • Clear codes and road test once the fault is fixed
A fault code names the circuit, not the part — we test before we replace. Six-step diagnostic process: read stored/pending/permanent codes; review freeze-frame data; check live sensor data against expected values; test the specific circuit the code points at; confirm readiness monitors before a smog test; clear codes and road test once the fault is fixed. Frequently asked questions

Can I just get the codes read for free somewhere?

You can, and it is a reasonable first step — a parts shop will read the number off the connector. What that gives you is the code, not the cause. The diagnosis is the part that takes test equipment and time.

My light went off on its own. Am I fine?

Not necessarily. The code stays in memory after the light goes out, and an intermittent fault usually comes back. It is worth scanning before it becomes a bigger problem or a failed smog test.

Will clearing the code fix it?

It turns the light off. If the underlying fault is still there, the light returns — and clearing codes also wipes the readiness monitors, which means the car will not pass a smog check until it has been driven long enough to reset them.
