Oil change service

Engine oil does more than lubricate. It carries heat away from the moving parts, holds combustion by-products in suspension so they do not form deposits, and protects against corrosion. All three of those jobs degrade as the oil ages, and the additive package wears out before the oil looks dirty.

We use the grade and specification your manufacturer calls for. Modern engines are specific about this — the wrong viscosity can affect everything from fuel economy to variable valve timing.

When it is due

  • At the interval in your owner’s manual, or when the car’s service light asks
  • Sooner if you mostly drive short trips in city traffic — the oil never fully warms up and moisture does not burn off
  • If the oil looks black and feels gritty between your fingers
  • Before a long drive, if you are close to the interval anyway
Short city trips use up the oil-change interval faster than the mileage suggests. Standard: at the interval in your owner’s manual, or when the car’s service light asks. Shortened: sooner if you mostly drive short trips in city traffic — the oil never fully warms up and moisture does not burn off. Also watch for: the oil looks black and feels gritty between your fingers; or before a long drive, if you are close to the interval anyway. What is included

  • Drain and replace engine oil to manufacturer specification
  • Replace the oil filter
  • Reset the service indicator
  • Check and top off other fluids
  • Inspect belts, hoses and visible leaks while the car is up
  • Check tyre condition and pressures

If we spot something on the multi-point check, we tell you about it and let you decide. We tell you what we found and what it costs before we do the work. Nothing happens that you did not agree to.

Frequently asked questions

Synthetic or conventional?

Follow the owner’s manual. Many modern engines specify full synthetic and are not designed around conventional oil — in those, using the cheaper option is a false economy. If your car allows either, synthetic generally holds up better in heat and stop-start traffic.

Is the 3,000-mile rule still true?

For most cars, no. That figure predates modern oils and engines. Your manual will give a longer interval, and many cars monitor oil condition and tell you directly.
